Father Bray and Coach Hamada were both championship coaches but their championships were not quickly nor easily won but were the result of their teaching their players the necessary skills and instilling in them the One Team ethos and spirit, and their players’ hard work and dedication. We believe both those esteemed icons of One Team were elated to hear Coach Kainoa Obrey ’99 tell the story of his Iolani varsity girls winning the 2016 State Championship in much the same fashion; One Team still applies, even today! Coach Kainoa was the featured speaker at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, now situated on the site of Fr. Bray’s former home, during the Iolani Raiders Boosters Club’s 7th annual celebration of the lives of Fr. Bray and Coach Hamada.
Coach Kainoa spoke of the journey from runners-up in 2015 to champions in 2016 and the role that One Team played in earning that championship, the first since 2001 and only the second ever for Iolani. To see Coach describe the incredible season, click here.
